BIRDING THE EVERGREEN STATE
   Pacific Northwest Winter - February 6-12, 2011Northwestern Washington & southwestern British Columbia, visiting the Skagit Valley, Birch Bay, Boundary Bay, Reifel Sanctuary, Victoria, and surrounding inland waterways. Superb winter birding, with especially high concentrations of waterfowl, alcids, gulls, and raptors.
Key Species: Trumpeter Swan, “Black” Brant, Gyrfalcon, Yellow-billed Loon, Ancient Murrelet, Northwestern Crow, Eurasian Skylark, Thayer’s Gull, Varied Thrush, and Golden-crowned Sparrow.
Other Highlights: groups of 20 or more Eurasian Wigeon; rafts of Brant, Long-tailed Duck, Harlequin Duck, and White-winged Scoter (with a few Black Scoters thrown in); more Bald Eagles than you will see anywhere in a single trip (south of Alaska); the chance for multiple Gyrfalcons and possible Snowy Owl; massive white waves of up to 20,000 Snow Geese; hundreds of Trumpeter Swans; three great ferry rides across the Strait of Georgia, Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Admiralty Inlet to Puget Sound; walking through mature Sitka Spruce forests and along the Victoria, B.C., waterfront; great Northwest seafood.
