THE HEART OF THE MEDITERRANEAN ...
Wings, Wine, and Wonders of Sicily - September 2011 Stay tuned here for complete details on our return to Sicily in 2011!
$4,150 approx.
At the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, the island of Sicily lies perfectly situated as a migration hub for European breeding birds and the cultural center of Mediterranean civilization. Join us for a fascinating exploration into the history, cuisine, and avifauna of magical Sicily. We will see the 4,000-year-old ruins at Cassibile River Canyon, where we will search for the Sicilian Rock Partridge and Cirl Bunting. Up the coast, White Wagtail and Sardinian Warbler will flit among the Greek temples outside Agrigento. We will see Flamingoes on the salt pans at Trapani; Bonelli’s Eagle at Zingaro Reserve; and Great Spotted Woodpecker on the slopes of Mt Etna. Audouin’s Gull may be seen flying along the sunny Sicilian beaches, while the tiny Common Kingfisher dives for fish in the shallows.
Beyond the birding and historical relics, we will immerse ourselves in the warm Sicilian hospitality, with the phenomenal foods and wines and fascinating customs of this cultural melting pot. Some of the best seafood in the world comes fresh daily from the Mediterranean, including swordfish, sardines, and octopus. The ancient history of the island can be tasted in the fruits, vegetables, and spices introduced over many centuries. And Sicily is legendary for its dolci, or sweets, with such mouthwatering specialties as cannoli, cassata, and unending varieties of biscotti, or cookies. Complementing our meals will be the ever-present café (what Americans call “espresso”) and some of the most flavorful wines and liqueurs anywhere. Join us for this grand Sicilian experience at the peak of fall migration!
